Lessons on vinyl and more!

Our big new announcement is the addition of rare hard to find vinyl from our lengthy career!

While doing some sorting and cleaning, we found we had a healthy little collection of our masterpieces and decided to release them to the world. The Lessons, Steinski’s Motorcade, sealed, unsealed, CD’s, some really collectible and playable mixes!

Pricing is around median market without being rip-off, especially since you know these are all 100% original authentic items. Descriptions will have grading information and if there are any questions we are here to help.

Open records may have new sleeves and jackets, some of the originals are not in good shape. We will not be cleaning them, just light blowing if needed. Paper sleeves are replaced with anti-static sleeves and each record comes sealed in a loose resealable outer jacket.

And coming soon: There are also a few one of a kinds - a complete set of Double Dee and Steinski on Disconet Records still sealed! Disconet was a popular DJ service during the ‘80s that agreed to include Lesson One and then Lessons Two and Three after many requests.

Or how about a set of record used in the making of Lesson One? Almost all songs are here: Play That Beat, I’ll Tumble For Ya, Rockit - perform your own Lesson One using the very same vinyl we used in the studio!

We hope to have more interesting recordings from our collections in the future, including spoken word. After all, we can’t take it with us!

Lesson 4 vinyl now in Japan and UK!

We’re painfully aware of the costly international shipping charges from US so we’re very happy to have made deals with Juno Records in UK and Delic Records in Japan to make Lesson 4 less expensive for our distant fans. The first box to Juno sold out immediately so we had to rush a second box!

Our new friend Yoshi at Delic Records in Japan just put his shipment up for sale and we’re excited to spread the word about Lesson 4: The Beat to new as well as long time fans!

Happy Halloween! And what a perfect day to make this announcement: 

Lesson 4 : The Video is now live on YouTube!

Lesson 4: The Beat has been given a trippy treatment by Timezone LaFontaine in an 11+ minute animation depicting your hip hop heroes in a trek across the continent in the flying orange VW Beetle named Chiclets with giant roof speakers blaring the warnings about the evil BEAT.

I suggest you take time to appreciate the details and hidden items woven through the psychedelic piece. I’ve been staring at it over the past year while sound designing it and I still find new bits I haven’t noticed before. 

We’re planning on an interview with Timezone in the near future so we can learn about some of his fascinating techniques especially the use of neural networks. He's also a musician who makes some intriguing, colorful and very original music and can be heard on his Bandcamp page. 

Needless to say we are beyond excited about Timezone’s interpretation of our latest Lesson and hope it excites you too.

Lesson 4 vinyl now available in UK from JUNO Records

We’re happy to announce JUNO Records in UK has picked up some copies of Lesson 4 vinyl for sale to the European market. Shipping from US to UK is ridiculously expensive and we realize it’s been a barrier for some people. Hopefully this will help get this record in the hands of more of our fans.

Steinski’s Nothing To Fear mix remastered

Hey all, just a quick note that Steinski’s legendary mix from 2003 Nothing To Fear is now available on our Bandcamp page -

Nothing To Fear originally aired on Coldcut's Solid Steel BBC radio show, and is newly remastered in 2019.

Steinski the man, the DJ, The remixer, The Producer, the legend has laid down a masterpiece of mixing history here that covers genres that few DJs could even understand yet alone mix, edit and morph into workable pieces for this tapestry of sheer ART. Just the intro alone spans more complex arrangements and clever mixing tricks than many a pro could even come close to matching. The thing is, he doesn't just take records (MP3s to the "new" DJ's) and mix them together to create a "blend" Steinski takes fragments of sound, music, voice snips and "twists" them to carefully and meticulously make them "fit" into his vision for this mastermix.

This is a private pressing that we're selling exclusively from our website for as long as supply lasts. This also marks the vinyl debut of ADA, who's been along for the ride handling turntable and production duties on several of the featured tracks.

New vinyl shop coming : Jazz and Voice Mail released on Bandcamp

Sorry we’ve been quiet so long! We have been busy behind the scenes and good things take time.

First big news is we are creating a vinyl shop right here on this site! We’ve got some special limited edition items and collectibles that will only be available here. We’ll be notifying our fans by email so be sure to sign up using the Contact page. That way you’ll get a chance at limited vinyl before the general public!

Double Dee at McBone Studios, NYC - 2000

Second, we’d like to announce the release of couple of our old favorites digitally on Bandcamp : Jazz (1998) and Voice Mail - Sugarhill Suite (1999).

Jazz is a remix of Afrika Bambaata and the Jazzy 5’s Jazzy Sensation from 1998 and marked our return after a 13 year break. It was released only on special promos to cd and vinyl and has been remastered for its first digital appearance.

Jazz was the first Double Dee and Steinski mix done using Pro Tools, version 4 to be exact, and so it was our first digitally produced piece. And it was the first time Steinski had hands on the controls for one of our mixes. To this day it sits at the top of our favorite tracks!

Voice Mail/Sugarhill Suite is our take on remixing some favorite hits from the Sugarhill catalog. A UK release that didn’t make it to vinyl it was only released on cd and has been a forgotten track until now! Also newly remastered.

Voice Mail was done the year after Jazz and by now I was up to speed using Pro Tools so Steinski and I were each working alone in our spare time and sending the work in progress back and forth until we were happy with it. The final mix was done at McBone Studios in NYC directly across the street from Irving Plaza where we later performed at sold out shows opening for DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist and Coldcut.

The big deal is we snagged legendary DJ Cut Chemist to add his signature scratching to the mix and of course his performance was stellar! Also adding bass is Adam Dorn, aka Mocean Worker. Again this is another of our top tracks, lots of fun voice bites and of course the Sugarhill hits that are unforgettable.

Remastered from the original masters, both are now available at Bandcamp right now so go get 'em!
